Meet Our Lesson Plan Search Expert

Joe

We've launched a new customized Lesson Plan Search engine on NEA.org to help you find the best, high-quality, standards-based lesson plans on the Internet.

We couldn't have done this without help from Carolyn Sprague, our resident Lesson Plan Search Administrator, and so I've invited her to introduce herself here.

If you need help finding a resource - or if you have a question about the Lesson Plan Search engine - post a new topic here, and Carolyn will do her best to help you find it.

I'm looking for some basic lesson plans/unit of study on the Lewis & Clarke Trail, 2nd/3rd grade class, Oregon and Washington. Can you help me?

Hi Maggie,

Thank you for post.

This is a very timely request, as August marks the birthdays of both William Clark (August 1, 1770) and Meriwether Lewis (August 18, 1774), and the beginning of and first journal entry for the Corps of Discovery's expedition.

I found quite a few related lesson plans using our lesson plan search tool at http://www.nea.org/tools/lesson-plan-search.html and have included these below.

Most of the Lewis & Clark lessons and other instructional materials were for the upper elementary, middle school or high school grade levels, but I was able to find a few for 2nd and 3rd grade, along with some for kindergarten, 1st grade, and grades 3-5 that could be adapted for 2nd and 3rd grade.

Here are the search phrases I used:

   Lewis and Clark
  "Lewis and Clark"
  Lewis and Clark expedition
  "Lewis and Clark" expedition
  "Lewis and Clark expedition"
  Lewis and Clark west
  Lewis and Clark westward expansion
  Lewis and Clark Oregon
  Lewis and Clark Washington
  Sacagawea
  "Corps of Discovery"

I also found and have included below the URLs for online games, an interactive exhibit, and a couple of other related resources that you and your students may find useful.

Hope this is helpful and meets your needs.

Please let me know if you need more help with this or future lesson plan searches or have other questions.

Carolyn

Hello Carolyn:

I am looking for EsL lesson plan for first graders. I haven't found any decent one .

thank you,

Millie

Hello Millie,

Thank you for posting your question about ESL lesson plans for 1st grade to the Lesson Plan Forum.

I searched the NEA Lesson Plan Search tool at http://www.nea.org/tools/lesson-plan-search.html using the following search phrases and have included a list of lesson plans below following the body of this message.

  Search Phrases:

   site:www.everythingesl.net grade 1

   site:www.everythingesl.net 1st grade

   site:www.everythingesl.net first grade

   site:www.mofb.org/ ESL

"English as a Second Language" OR "ESL" OR "English Language Learner" OR "English Language Learners" OR "ELL"

("English as a Second Language" OR "ESL" OR "English Language Learner" OR "English Language Learners" OR "ELL") AND (Grade 1 OR 1st Grade OR First Grade)

I also found ESL lesson plans from the J. Paul Getty Museum web site in the NEA Lesson Plan Search, but all of Getty's ESL lessons are intended for adult English language learners.

If you do a Google search, you will find that there are quite a few ESL lesson plan sites on the Web. However, these sites are either designed for adult ESL students, only include links to colleges and universities that offer ESL courses, are plastered with ads, or require a paid subscription or membership registration for access to their resources, so I have not included them in the NEA Lesson Plan Search.

I hope that this is helpful.

Please let me know if I can help you further.

Would there be a way you could set up a keyword search of the lesson plans you have pulled off the web and onto this page?

Hello Wilson,

I'm not sure, but can look into this for you.

There are many, many lesson plans, teacher's guides, activities, games, and interactives included in the lesson plan search and I am continually adding more resources, so its contents are constantly evolving and are by no means exhaustive or all-inclusive. I am always looking to fill subject and grade level gaps and try to base the types of resources that I add to the lesson plan search on user query and search term statistics, and the topics of various discussions on the NEA public forum.

If you are looking for specific types of lesson plans, I am happy to assist with some keyword and other search tips.

    lesson plan template
    social studies lesson plan template
"social studies" "lesson plan template" "united states department of education"

I have also listed a couple of books below that are good resources. Of particular value is the first book listed: Preparing Instructional Objectives: A Critical Tool in the Development of Effective Instruction by Robert F. Mager.
